You may be surprised at what type of car costs the most and least to insure. According to Russ Rader, spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, small sports cars are among the most expensive. "Contrary to the idea that smaller cars can help you avoid crashes, the data shows that small cars get into more accidents," he says. "If you feel like you have a vehicle that can zip in and out of traffic, chances are you'll do that." Rader continues, "Sporty cars tend to be driven in ways that lead to more crashes. They also tend to be driven by younger, riskier drivers."
Smaller cars also tend to be more affordable, which makes them more attractive to those same younger drivers who might be more willing to pay for stolen parts for repairs. Below we have links to various studies for the most and least expensive cars to insure.
Don't forget smaller cars are harder to see be it changing lanes or crossing intersections. That makes it harder for others to avoid hitting you, especially when parked. Few people ever run into big vans or tractor trailer trucks in parking lots.
