We started our search with the November 2011 issue of Consumer Reports. This issue of Consumer Reports (CR) makes recommendation for "the Best Products of the Year" in what they say are "500+ top picks and great buys."  This issue is timed with the holidays and seems to give a broad range of products and prices that are good, but might not be ideal for each user, thus making it a good starting point. I'd trust it more than walking into a big box store and asking the salesperson what is the best product for a budget since sales staff are very often motivated by special promotions to move certain brands.  The small "high end" stores might be more motivated to sell models with higher markups and less online competition.  First thing to notice is our recommended product isn't on their list.
