In the March/April 2009 issue of the AARP Magazine, Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, M.D, Ph.D.  LIsted foods for an "Anticancer Lifestyle."  He recommends avoiding refined sugar "wherever it lurks, including sodas and ketchup."  He also recommends avoiding white flowewr that quickly turns to sugar in your body.  I've replace white rice with brown rice in my diet and use whole grain bread instead of white breads.

Dr. David Servan-Schreiber goes on to list "known cancer fighters" as foods to add to your diet for what he calls "mighty meals."  Here is his list of cancer fighting foods:

Herbs and spices
  • thyme
  • sosemary
  • mint
  • basil
  • sage
  • turmeric
  • ginger
Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids
  • salmon
  • sardines
  • mackerel
  • walnuts
  • green vegetables
      Berries
  • raspberries
  • blueberries
  • blackberries
Cruciferous Vegetables:
all contain strong antioxidants
  • broccoli
  • cauliflower
  • cabbage
  • Brussel sprouts
Stinkers
  • garlic
  • onions
  • leeks
Beverages
  • Green tea (flavonoids)

Other foods believed to prevent cancer:

Dark Leafy Greens - Dark greens are rich sources of antioxidants called carotenoids.  These scavenge dangerous free radicals from the body before they can promote cancer growth.

Grapes
- Grapes (and red wine) contain the chemical resveratrol, which is a very potent antioxidant that can prevent cell damage before it begins.

Tomatoes
-
The compound lycopene, (which is most easily absorbed from cooked tomatoes) has been shown to prevent prostate cancer, as well as cancer of the breast, lung, and stomach.

Flaxseeds
-
Flax contains lignans, which can have an antioxidant effect and block or suppress cancerous changes.  The omega-3 fatty acids can also help protect against colon cancer.

Mushrooms
-
Many mushrooms contain compounds that can help the body fight cancer and build the immune system as well.

Whole Grains
-
Whole grains contain a variety of anti-cancer compounds including antioxidants, fiber, and phytoestrogens.  These can help decrease the risk of developing most types of cancer.
