With father's day approaching, our readers want to know what is the best electric shavers for men? We did a quick search of favorite websites and magazines to look for a consensus before we recommend the Philips Norelco Speed 8240 Men's Shaving System 
 
The June 2011 Consumer Reports Magazine1 ranked razors for "the closest shave."
  • For foil razors, they agreed the Braun 7 was tops at 80 points but two models from Panasonic (ES8109s & ES-LA63) scored slightly lower at 78 and 77 points, respectively. They actually recommended a lower scoring, lower cost Remington "Pivot and FLex F-5790) at only $55.
  • For Rotary shavers, they recommended the top three Philips/Norelco shavers with the "SensoTouch 3D 1250X" at $200 scoring the top rating of 73 points. Our favorite 8240 tied with the 8260CC for second place at 71 points.
Consumersearch2 analyzes consumer expert and user reviews from websites that include Amazon.com, ConsumerReports.org, Walmart.com, etc.  They currently list their top pick in each of 4 categories as:

#1 Best men's electric shaver:  Braun Series 7 760cc -

Although it's expensive, reviewers say the Braun Series 7 760cc foil shaver is the best men's electric shaver on the market and is about as close as you'll get to a blade shave. Reviews are mostly upbeat about the Braun Series 7 shavers, but the cleaning system draws some criticism, including the cost of replacing refill cartridges (*Est. $16 for three) about once a month. "It's the closest shave I've ever had without cutting myself, and that includes the new triple blades. But those refills are pricey...How to make each cartridge last six months. Here's how: Clean your razor once a week instead of every day. Between cleans, remove the cartridge from the cleaning machine and reseal the cartridge with the original plastic tab.

#2 Best rotary electric shaver:  Philips Norelco 8240 Men's Shaving System -

Though foil shavers (including the Braun Series 7 760cc) generally are preferred overall, rotary shavers deal with longer hairs well and are sometimes preferred over foil shavers by men who shave less frequently.  You clean it by rinsing under running tap water.
We own this one and love it!  We find the blades eventually get clogged but you can blast this out every few months with a $42 Waterpick cordless flosser normally used for cleaning your teeth when not cleaning the razor!

We don't like the idea of adding to land fill with "refills" be it from disposable razors with three or more blades or Braun foil shavers.






#3 Wet/dry foil shaver  - Panasonic Vortex ES8109S

Although Braun dry foil shavers receive better reviews overall, experts and owners say the Panasonic Vortex ES8109S is your best choice in a wet/dry shaver (one that is used with shaving cream or lotion, as well as in the shower.)

#4 Best travel shaver - Braun MobileShave M-90
        Est. $30 - Compare Prices
Reviewers say they're pleasantly surprised by the closeness of the shave they get from the Braun MobileShave M-90. This compact electric shaver is convenient for travel or for quick touch-ups throughout the day. A few owners say they keep one in a workplace locker or in a vehicle.
